Why we can’t wait for the all-new Lexus RX

The Lexus RX is the best selling model in Lexus’s history, with almost 2.2 million examples sold worldwide since it was first launched in 1997.

A completely new model of the car is a significant moment for the brand then and the fourth generation will debut later this year.

What’s most obvious is the exterior changes. The new RX adopts the latest version of the Lexus spindle grille – available with either the mesh or, for the hybrid model, horizontal blades. This is flanked with new bi-LED headlamps, each bearing the characteristic Lexus triple L.

Around the side of the car, the C-pillar has been blacked out, giving a floating roof impression, particularly effective when chrome-edged or with a light body colour. The new large LED tail light units also bear L-shaped designs to tie in with the front.

The slightly larger car offers more room for all occupants – so much so that a seven-seat version is in development – while the optional adaptive variable suspension will make the ride more comfortable than ever.

Other new technologies include a ‘no-touch’ powered tailgate, a colour head-up display, a 360-degree view monitor and a larger, 12.3-inch central display screen. An opening panoramic sunroof is also available as an option.

On the safety front, the RX will come equipped with Lexus Safety System+, which includes Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Automatic High Beam (AHB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). This can be upgraded to include Adaptive High Beam System, Panoramic View Monitor and Blind Spot Monitor.

The RX can also be equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) to guard against hazardous driving situations.

The UK range of Lexus RX will use two engines. The RX 200t is equipped with the 2.0 turbocharged petrol, producing 241hp, while the RX 450h hybrid uses a 3.5 litre V6 paired with electric motors to produce 308hp.

Prices start at £39,995 for the RX 200t and £46,995 for the RX 450h, and the first deliveries will be in January 2016.
