Lexus LS460h

The Lexus LS is the only luxury car from Japan available to UK buyers.

This puts it in an excellent position as the only car bringing traditional Japanese strengths to the sector and with 25 years of UK sales now, it's firmly established amongst the European luxury marques.

The current Lexus LS is the fourth generation model and available in two guises: the 4.6-litre V8 Lexus LS460; and the hybrid Lexus LS600h. The LS600h is the world's first full hybrid V8 car, supplementing the 5-litre V8 with a 221hp electric motor.

Through the LS, Lexus has introduced world-first technology that has subsequently found its way to other brands' luxury cars. A Lexus LS was the first car in the world to include standard satellite navigation in 1998, while 1995's LS400 was the first to feature a 6CD changer. Adaptive air suspension first featured on a Lexus LS model with the third generation in 2000.

The current LS is no different. The LS460 was, at launch, the first automatic eight-speed transmission in the world, while the Climate Concierge system is a first in climate control technology, using infrared to monitor the facial temperatures of all four occupants and adjusting the climate control zones automatically to compensate.

With the top specification LS600h L you gain the option to specify four Ottoman-style electric reclining seats with extending footrests, and a centre rear console in place of the fifth seat with power sockets and a drinks chiller.

Though the Lexus LS is a luxury car, it exhibits a surprising turn of pace. With the petrol engine and electric motor working together in the four-wheel drive LS600h, 60mph will come up in 6.3 seconds - in whisper-quiet serenity. Although the LS460 is less powerful, it's also around 400kg lighter and with 388hp it will reach 60mph around half a second quicker. Both are limited to a top speed of 155mph.

Despite the V8 power, both LS models are reasonably frugal. The LS460 manages to return 26.2mpg combined and with an emissions rating of 249g/km it avoids the top tax bracket. The LS600h manages just 199g/km CO2 and reaches 32.8mpg combined.

In addition to the LS series' innovation, technology, luxury and performance, Lexus has won more JD Power customer satisfaction awards in the UK than any other manufacturer, making the LS the ideal choice.
