The Lexus IS 220d: winner of the 2014 WhatCar's Best Executive Car Award

In a super competitive market, the sports saloon received a five-star rating from the judges who praised the car for its great reliability, excellent interior equipment and powerful engine.

What Car? experts were particularly impressed by the IS’s five-star Euro NCAP rating and exemplary reliability, with the car often topping the annual JD Power survey.

Jim Holder, What Car? Editor, said: "The IS 220d is a very good car that delivers high standards across the board.

“It won because it is super-reliable, which is a very important consideration for user car buyers, and because its price makes it a very competitive buy compared to some of its German rivals."

What Car's used car expert James Ruppert added that "Lexus owners report how well their cars run, with few problems, and also praise the service they receive from dealers".

Richard Balshaw, Lexus Director, added: "The success of the IS 220d in What Car's Used Car of the Year Awards reflects the lasting quality Lexus builds into all its models.

“While the second-generation IS presents as a superb proposition in the pre-owned market, our new IS has raised the bar even further in terms of quality, reliability and driver rewards."

What Car? recommended the SE trim line version of the IS 220d; as the name suggests, it comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine putting out 175bhp and 400Nm of torque.

The IS 220d has as a top speed of 134mph and will get from a standstill to 60mph in just 8.9 seconds.

Economy figures are also notable, with 44.8mpg on a combined cycle and 168g/km of CO2 emissions.

Inside you can expect to find the typical quality touches that the Japanese marque are known for, with cruise control, a CD autochanger and alloy wheels coming as standard.

Plumping for the SE trim adds electronically adjustable seats and bigger alloy wheels.
