UK tyre law requires that your vehicle is fitted with the correct size and type of tyre for the vehicle model you are driving and for the purpose the vehicle is being used. This means fitting the correct tyres and making sure they are inflated to the car manufacturer's recommended tyre pressure.

The legal limit for minimum depth tyre tread is 1.6 millimetres across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre’s surface.
Replacing your tyres before the legal limit is reached is strongly recommended. Many leading vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing tyres at 3 millimetres. In wet weather with tyre tread at 1.6 millimetres it takes an extra car length (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than it would if your tread was the recommended 3 millimetres.

Ensuring that tyres of different construction types are not fitted to opposite sides of the same axle is also a legal requirement. Radial and cross-ply are the two main tyre types and must not be mixed on the same axle.

Regularly checking your tyres can help you avoid 3 penalty points on your license and a £2,500 fine (per tyre) for driving with tyres that are worn beyond the legal minimum limit.

Legal Tyre Tread Depths Explained

Tyre condition is measured by taking three readings across the width of the tyre. Tyres are checked for normal, everyday wear and tear, cuts, lumps, exposed ply and cord, bulges or tears, pattern-suitability and irregular wear patterns, which may indicate the need for a four wheel alignment check to be carried out by one of our Technicians.

What is the minimum tyre tread depth?

The current legal limit is 1.6mm tread over the central ¾ of the tyre in a continuous band around the entire circumference of the tyre.

Tyre performance starts to drop off quickly, particularly in the wet once the tread reaches 3mm and the rate of wear can increase too. We recommend checking tread depth frequently once it reaches 3mm and replacing tyres before the tread wears below 2mm
