TIPS FOR DRIVING IN WINTER

Good road observation, anticipation and preparation with vehicle speed adjusted to the conditions are essential if drivers are to steer a safe route through the numerous hazards posed by winter weather.

Reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces make winter driving particularly hazardous, which has prompted Inchcape Lexus to issue winter safety advice to all our customers.

Extreme weather conditions, either very hot or very cold, will show up any deficiencies in both driver and vehicle. That is why it is essential that not only are drivers given the best possible information on how to drive safely in poor weather, but that customers ensure that vehicles are serviced and maintained in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and a special winter maintenance check is undertaken.

Our top five vehicle condition tips are:
All vehicles should have a full winter inspection including having the anti-freeze tested.
Tyres should be checked regularly and kept properly inflated – tyres should be checked after even short journeys on cold days.
Tyre tread should be monitored regularly – the legal minimum is 1.6mm – as tyre performance is even more critical in winter conditions and the maximum fine for driving with illegal tyres is £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre.
Lights should be checked to ensure that they are clean, working and properly adjusted in the case of headlights.
The windscreen and windows should always be clean and the washer bottle filled with screen wash.

Such points may seem routine, but drivers frequently forget to undertake basic maintenance checks and it could be the difference between life and death. A winter vehicle check and regular reminders to family members on the importance of ensuring vehicles are in tip-top condition; particularly during hazardous winter driving conditions will greatly reduce the likelihood of an accident.

During winter the biggest single danger to any driver is being unable to see properly as the right decisions will not be made if the road cannot be seen clearly.

Fog is one of the most dangerous weather conditions. An accident involving one vehicle can quickly involve many others, especially if they are driving too close to one another.

Good road observation is essential so that drivers can interpret conditions accurately and adjust speed accordingly. Driving too fast on a slippery or wet road surface will substantially reduce tyre grip and increase the risk of skidding.

Always reduce speed on slippery surfaces. Avoid harsh braking and acceleration. Always increase the gap with the vehicle ahead when in poor conditions as tyre grip will not be as good and it will take longer to brake – allow up to ten times the normal distance for braking, especially on motorways.

Smooth control is another essential element of safer winter driving. Drivers should always aim to brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible so as not to affect tyre grip on the road surface. As always, better, safer driving, especially in poor weather, is about good preparation, good self-maintenance, good vehicle maintenance, the right knowledge and the right attitude.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.  As well as the things you should be carrying on every journey regardless of the weather, you should make up a winter emergency kit to keep in the boot – hopefully you won’t need it but you will be very glad it's there if you do.

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR ANOTHER HARD WINTER?

From visual inspections to antifreeze, our complimentary Winter Check is comprehensive and includes a:

- Battery test
Constant use of heater and lights can be enough to drain your battery. We'll ensure your battery has the power it needs to keep you safe and warm throughout the cold snap.

 - Coolant Check
Sub zero temperatures can seriously interfere with your car's mechanics - and even damage the engine. We'll check your coolant is at the right level to keep you moving until spring.

 - Brake fluid check
The braking performance of your vehicle is important at all times of the year, but especially in the winter. Our Lexus trained technicians will check your brakes to ensure maximum levels of safety.

 - Free VSR (Visual Safety Report)
Qualified technicians will run 37 visual checks - free of charge
This includes elements such as: - Wiper Blades
- Braking system
- Tyre condition

Preparing for the winter means making sure your car is equipped for the right weather. Winter weather tyres offer improved safety and superior performance in wet, icy and snowy conditions.

Summer tyres wear quicker when the outside temperature drops below 7°C, that's why in most European countries it is common practice for drivers to fit winter weather tyres in late autumn and to revert back to standard in the late spring.

Independent research has shown that UK drivers feel less safe when driving in winter conditions. With additional levels of grip and an improved stopping distance (11 metres when braking on icy roads at 20mph), winter weather tyres can help allay such fears.

Are winter weather tyres only for when it really snows heavily?
Definitely not. All modern winter weather tyres are designed for optimal safety below 7°C, in the cold, wet, ice and snow. So although they will afford much higher levels of traction in snowy conditions, they offer superior performance in all winter conditions.

Do I need to replace all my tyres with winter weather tyres if I only have a rear wheel drive car?
Yes, with the improved grip available from winter weather tyres, it is essential that all four tyres be replaced at the same time. The car may skid or be more difficult to control if only two winter weather tyres are fitted to one of the axles.

When driving on winter weather tyres can I drive at my normal speed?
Winter weather tyres, by design may have a slightly lower speed rating than summer tyres. All tyres display a rating letter (S, T, H...) on the side of the tyre designating the maximum speed. For example a winter weather tyre that has an H rating has a maximum speed of 131mph, this should not compromise your driving in winter conditions.

Do winter weather tyres wear out quicker?
No, winter weather tyres are designed to perform and last better in colder conditions while summer tyres actually wear faster when the outside temperature drops below 7°C. Add to that the extra grip afforded by winter weather tyres and the argument to change tyres is compelling.
